All About Seals and Sea
Lions K-3
Sea Lions and Seals
Sea lions and seals are
found all around the world.
You can see them in any
harbor. They are mammals
and breathe air just like we
do. Because they live in the
ocean part of the time and
eat sea creatures they are
called marine mammals.
They eat octopuses, squid
and fish. They use their
whiskers to feel for shellfish
at the bottom of the ocean.
They like to play, sleep, and
eat. They have a thick coat
of blubber or fat that keeps
them warm in cold waters.
All seals and sea lions are
protected by Federal law.
That means no one should
do anything to hurt them.
SEALS
SEA LIONS
Seals have short
front flippers covered
with hair. Their hind
flippers are short.
Seals have no ear
flaps. Seals, also
called true seals, live
alone.
Sea lions have long
front flippers that are
hairless. Their hind
flippers are large.
They use their hind
flippers to push them
through the
ocean.They have a
small head with ear
flaps. Sea lions like to
live in large groups.
They make lots of
noise barking at each
other. That is how
they talk.
DO YOU KNOW
The most dangerous
preditor to seals and
sea lions is not in the
ocean. It is man.
Pollution from land
that ends up in the
ocean makes them
sick. They get caught
in fishing nets.
DO YOU KNOW
The seal that you see
juggling balls is not a seal.
It is a California sea lion.
