SURPRISE! Getting there is COSTING
LESS as gas prices drop
Americans are getting a break this holiday
and hopefully for the rest of the winter. Gasoline prices are actually dropping big time across the nation. It is not a uniform price drop with some gasoline stations still charging more than others. Energy officials say supplies are building and prices are dropping due to increase reserves. |

Can we borrow a Cup of Electricity?
The Golden State is also getting zapped on
another energy front--electricity. Politicians from Sacramento to the nation's capitol are charged up over the issue with the voters back home screaming that they are being gouged by out of state energy suppliers. Californians can expect as many as thirty days of rolling blackouts this summer with temperatures getting as hot as voters' opinions.
At the federal level there was an attempt to cap
electricity prices until what one democrat called "this dysfunctional market" is put back to normal. But that was voted down basically along party lines. In Sacramento, Governor Gray Davis signed a law letting the Sate borrow 13.4 Billion dollars to pay for electricity. In the meantime consumers face more rate hikes and the rest of the nation is watching. |

Fill It With Veggies, Please
Driving in San Francisco can make you hungry
these days, with the smell of french fries in the air. It is because the City by the Bay is the first major city to pump the alternative fuel, Biodiesel to the public. Biodiesel is made from either recycled vegetable oil from restaurants or from soybean oil. In terms of pollution, Biodiesel, eliminates carbon monoxide and particulates in the air. It does not however, eliminate nitrogen oxide which causes smog, but its a start to curb dependence on the old fossil fuel habit. |

What's NEW in Space
|
|
Two new satellites named Jason 1 and Timed
have been launched into space to study and understand the earth's climate. Jason 1 will eventually replace the Topex/Poseidon satellite that has been used to measure changes in the ocean's topography. Data from these new satellites will monitor weather events like El Nino and La Nina. |
